ROB ONE

Alright...

Here's Another Homeboy of mine that passed away to early.

This cat right here was one of Dusk's major influences...

L.A. Legend Rob One. He passed away March 2000. Very Influential on the LA scene. He was a graf head also. He used to write for CBS. He D.J.'ed for a group called the Shape Shifters. Also had a routine with Woody Woodpecker saying "The West Is The Best".

One of the things he did was called "The Fly I.D. Show". It was broadcasted out of Cal State University of Northridge.

I don't have any shows.

The only thing I have is this record.

"The Fly I.D. Show Breakbeats"

I believe this came out in 1996 sometime.

Well here's side A of the record....

If anyone has any shows please holleration at the nation...

R.I.P. DJ DUSK

This week I want to give ya'll a mix from the one and only...

D.J. Dusk

If your from L.A. you have heard of him. If not...

He was one of the D.J.'s at L.A.'s Root Down along side Miles Tackett from the Breakesta.

Used to kick it with Rob One

Played everything from Latin, Hip Hop, Rock and more

He was the host with the most.

I can't really go into words to express what Dusk did for the L.A. scene but the effects are still felt

Well here's a mix from when he used to throw a night over at Star Shoes. He played Saturday nights there.

Miss you homeboy....

NIGHTLIFE with DA BEATMINERZ

Alright.

This one has been around for a few weeks.

But...

Hey!!

Who cares..this is a place it should be.

On Sept. 11, 2009. The Beat Junkies threw "Nightlife".

"Nightlife" is a club that used hold every 2nd saturday of the month.

We no longer do it like that. We just throw a party when it's time.

So we had Da Beatminerz come into town with DJ Bizarro & Wayne-Ski.

First we did Beat Junkie Radio.

Then the next night we did the club.

Anyhow, enough with the yappin.

If you don't have this yet then get it while it's hot.

It's the last 2 hours of the evening. Babu on the wheels and Mr. Choc on the mic. Then the Beatminerz take over with Mr. Walt & Evil D in the mix. Crazy Bizarro & Rhettmatic host the rest of the evening.

Enjoy..and thank you to VTech for the support.

R.I.P. ROC RAIDA

R.I.P. ROC RAIDA. ABCNT
Roc Raida based on a photo by Brittany Somerset.

Anthony Williams (May 18, 1972 – September 19, 2009), better known as Grandmaster Roc Raida, was an DJ, turntablist, producer and member of DJ groups The X-Men and The X-Ecutioners.

He won the 1995 DMC World DJ Championship.

Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams was born in Harlem New York.

He passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2009

He began DJing at the age of 12, spinning at local parties around Harlem. By 1995, Roc Raida represented the United States at the DMC World DJ Championships and won! He was the first DJ from New York City to hold this title and was automatically inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, he lived his passion - being a professional Hip Hop DJ. He was blessed to have touring the world as his day job. Raida was honored to have worked with recording artists including Showbiz & AG, Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap, D.I.T.C., Big L and most recently, he toured exclusively with Busta Rhymes.

In 1999, Grand Master status was bestowed upon him by a group of pioneering Hip Hop DJs, during a conference at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.

Roc Raida through battles, performances, videos, dvds and even a Pepsi commercial, influenced thousands of DJs, both to party rock as well as to battle and he took several aspiring DJs under his wing to mentor personally. As a member of legendary turntablist crews, The X-Men and The X-ecutioners, he along with his brothers-in-vinyl took the world by storm, innovating, influencing and inspiring at every turn. In 2006, to progress and contribute to the Hip Hop DJ battle scene, he founded Roc Raida’s Gong DJ Battle, a national DJ battle that occurs annually, combining head to head turntablist dexterity with comedy and drama.

Raida was given his name by former group member MC Sergio of Harlem NY. The two toured through Harlem performing at multiple night clubs before Raida went on to join the X-Men with Sean C, Johnny Cash, Steve D, Diamond J, DMD, Rob Swift, Mr Sinister, Dr.Butcher,GM Spin, Fatman Scoop which later became the X-Ecutioners

Also....If you know these records...don't call it out..I don't like doing these type of mixes because I've seen artist get popped because of these type of mixes..not everyone can afford to clear some of these loops.....thank you.

Ruff Draft Record Re-Release Party (4/6/07)

It's Dilla month around these parts.

As I get ready for Nightlife tomorrow night (2/14/09)...I like to re-visit sets of the
past.

Here's one from the archives...

This party was hosted by Frank N Dank.

Took Place in Toronto, Canada.

I D.J.'ed for most of the night.

Now here's a quote about the evening from ptahh...

Apr 12 2007, 01:22 PM

"I practically fell asleep. Boring as fuck! same old song's - RUNNING. ok it's a classic, must it be played everytime i go out? A lot of people want to go to a laptop dilla beat tape party.. They are tired of the RUNNING syndrome as well.

I left somewhere between 2 and 2:30 am. I did not hear 1 ruff draft song and this was a party to promote the album???

I give up. For now on Dillathons at my apartment.

Poor weather does not mean anything. If you serve it up hot people will bang. plain and simple.

Spinna, houseshoes, and Q-tip i think have done the best tribute sets so far. Waajeed has had his moments. I'm sure he can step up if he really wants to - being that he goes waaaay back in detroit w/slum, but his last set was seriously lacking."

.......................

I don't think he was at the same show.

This is the last hour of the night.

Jaylib Live 2004

(pictured set list from a show in Edinburgh)

This is the first show we ever did. It was a party for the release of the Madvillain LP. We didn't practice for the show...or any of them for that matter. I would ask them what they wanted to perform then they would go "I don't know....you make up the set list"...hahaha.

Well, thank you to Madlib & the Stones Throw Family (Wolf, Jank, & Egonavichi) for giving me such an experience. It was a blessing..Getting to spin for my favorite producers. I remember getting tapes from Jake One of Slum Village and beat tapes and just geeking out with the few homies who knew what time it was. Then I'm getting to d.j. and go on tour with this dude..Man, talk about a dream come true..

Anyhow...enough with the heartfelt moments..

Edit: The voices you hear are B+ & Melo-D (who recorded this set)

Enjoy the very first show as Jaylib..I start it when J Dilla comes out on stage then let it roll out till the end..Special Guest Apperance by Common

Dilla Set - Soundlessons (2-25-06)

Since it is the month of Dilla for everyone....

(it's Dilla all year for myself)

I thought I would put up a mix from Soundlession. A club in L.A...the d.j.'s for the evening are Kutmah, Alfred Hawkins, J Logic and your host is Aloe Blacc.

He just passed away a few weeks earlier and it was still fresh in my mind at this party...I'm not really doing any crazy mixing...just playing the new shit (well "The Shining" wouldn't be out for a minute)...for some reason my set was only 20 mins or so.

Anyhow...here's a taste of what's in store at Nightlife coming up on the 14th.....

Wax Poetics #31 aka Tasters Choice 7 (2009)

I did a "Record Run Down" in issue 31 of Wax Poetics. The cover is Shuggie Otis / MF DOOM. I'm sure there is copies still available out there.

A few people were asking about what some of the records sounded like. A few of them your not gonna find. Maybe...but I don't think that you will.

So here's a mix from the albums that I picked for my article with a little bit more on why I love these records.

I didn't throw in the Divine Force "Holy War".

Enjoy folks...

Tracklist

M.C. Mitchski - "Red Alert Is A Great Man"
-Red Alert played this record all the time...I would have also if I had a record talking about how great a man I am.....on second thought never mind...He did a mix almost like this.

Slum Village - "I Don't Know"
-What needs to be said about this. The first vinyl release from Slum Village. If you didn't live in Japan you were not going to get a copy of this....Luckily I have the Rhettmatic hook up...and he has the Japan hook up.

Tim Maia - "You Don't Know What I Know"
-From Vol.2 of this record dedicated to his new found religion. He soon found out the guy who headed the whole organization was doing something naughty to Tim's wife. Needled to say he soon quit the religion and re-called and burned all remaining copies of the albums.

Jack Bruce Suite
-Side A is a monster. I never really listen to the other side because the first has so much heat. Well here's some samples you'll be quick to pick up on. I did this section similar to Cut Chemist....he did something like this on one of his tapes.

M.C. Mitchski - "Brooklyn Blew Up The Bridge"
-The flip side to the "Red Alert.." cut we kicked off this mix with. Another one Red Alert would play. This came out at the height of the South Bronx vs. The Bridge drama.

James Brown Suite
-"In The Jungle Groove" is one of the ultimate albums. Even if it is a compilation. This was the first time "Funky Drummer" was on LP.....if full length. It was on a 45 and on "Ultimate Breaks & Beats" but never on LP. I could have made just a 45 minute mix of this one album.

Big Apple Vol.2
-When I heard this mix on L.A. radio station KACE 103.9 FM...during the "Saturday Night Mastermix" with the Supreme Team (No..not the ones from Malcolm McLaren...these cats were biters). They snuck this in the middle of one of their mixes. I recorded the show and I listened to this part all the time. The record was put together by The Latin Rascals...go look for the radio show they did. Almost the same thing here but for 2 hours.

Pretty Tony - "Get Some"
-Electro cut that takes me back to the days of my old crews....Rhe Crisis Cru and P.S.K. (Pullin Suckas Cards). I don't know why folks don't play this one. From the producer of Debbie Deb, Trinere & Freestyle...Tony Butler

Turntable Talk
-I heard this record and wanted a 4 track to make mixes like this....1984 In full effect.

Funkapolition - "As Time Goes By"
-I didn't have this one in the record review. I only talked about how I was looking for a copy. Look what I found. The frickin LP!!! Now that's what's up! British Soul / Funk.

Atmosphere "Free Your Mind / Dancing in Outer Space"
-This record was the reason I started to want more that British stuff. Good music.

.....so there you go.

If you want to see what I really said about there records then go pick up an issue of Wax Poetics...remember #31. Like the date for Halloween.

big up to the cats at Wax Poetics for having me in the mag.......finally.

Yes! There is a Taster's Choice Disc 6. You just wasn't looking for it.

Joe Cooley On 1580 KDAY Part 2

GO DOWNLOAD THE STONES THROW PODCAST #41

www.stonesthrow.com

Alright everyone....here's another blast from the past.

The "King of Scratch" Joe Cooley

.....again

I'm on a KDAY fix right now

.....I need more

...I'll trade or something

......

anyone

Well this one is from the year 1986. This is "The Traffic Jam" on 1580 AM STEREO KDAY right after Dr.Dre left the show to pursure his career. He was making beats for the World Class Wrecking Crew (Who just got signed to Epic)......So in comes in the Mixmasters.

We talked about them already.

If you don't remember go look for the other Joe Cooley mix.

The Traffic Jam is only 15 mins. long...not the original 30 I thought it was. Finding this tape made me remember that you could put 4 shows on a 60 min. cassette.

Your not gonna find this anywhere else...and if you do..

they got it from me.

Tracklist:

Channel One-"Technicolor"
Egyptain Lover-"The Lover"
Gigalo Tony-"Smurf Rock"
A nice little bonus beat...

Dang only 4 tracks!!

Joe Cooley on 1580 AM Stereo KDAY

(yes that's the real building)

Alright...KDAY part 2

Yup...another KDAY mix for those that need it...These are legendary mixes right here..the D.J.'s might not be clean at all times..but hey..

"even the greatest fuck up"....David Porter

Big influence right here...The "King Of the Scratch" Joe Cooley..on a show called "Saturday Night Live".

The title tells you when it was on.

If you don't know who Joe Cooley is.

He was a member of a group called Rodney O & Joe Cooley.

They were on 5 different record labels.....so they had some type of appeal.

Anyways...Back to Joe Cooley

He was one of the pioneers out here on the west coast..he was the "King of the Scratch" along with Aladdin, Battlecat, Tony G and a few others.

(I don't have Rhett here to help me out with more names this time.)

His cuts on "Supercuts (Yeah Boy)" & "Everlasting Bass" alone are stuff made of legend...Go listen to those tracks then you'll see why this cat is loved.

Enough talk...here's the mix.

of course the tracklist

(i don't know what this beat is...if you do. LET ME KNOW!)
The Real Roxanne-"Bang Zoom (Let's Go!)"
Audio Two-"Top Billin"
L.A. Wee Vo & DJ Felli Fel-"Rappin"
Davy D-"Davy's Ride"
Mantronix beat....I think it's Tricky Tee
M.C. Hammer-"Ring 'Em"

he plays that first beat for a minute...but he does cut alot at least.

the reason I use Zshare is so I can see how many folks are downloading.....without having to sign in and all that stuff.......next up...the record run down mix..

Julio G-KDAY 1580 AM STEREO

Happy New Years Folks!!

For my first post of the new year I'm gonna drop a 1580 AM STEREO KDAY mix.......this is the one & only Julio G.

The Beat Junkies always talk about Julio. Melo-D & Rhettmatic use to dj for his show when KDAY came back....as 93.5 on FM....and it wasn't the same.

Does everyone know what KDAY is?

Well...KDAY was the 1st all hip hop radio station. The host were....mornings were handled by Russ Parr. Afternoons were Greg Mack. When it hit 6pm the station was very difficult to hear.

Anyhow, Greg Mack at 5pm would have the Traffic Jam on. The first DJ was Dr.Dre (no not the one from MTV). Then after he left there was Jammin Gemini, Tony G, Julio G., Joe Cooley, Battlecat, Aladdin, Siberian Knight, M-Walk, Ralph M, Trayski..and a few others I don't remember right now. The show was only 30 minutes.

Shout out to Rhettmatic for the help out.

So enjoy a mix from the year 1988 from the one and only Julio G.

"This Beat Kicks"
"Have A Nice Day"
"Cracker Jack"
"Get Some"
"Makossa Bonus Beats"
"Sexy Style (Sexy Ain't It)"
"Clear"
"Planet Rock"
"When I Hear Music"

I don't know who does the 2nd turntable when "Clear" comes on.
